Gottfried Schneider (musician)

Gottfried Schneider (born June 10, 1948 in Bad Gastein , Austria ) is a German violinist and university professor.

Live and act

Grew up in a German-Austrian family of musicians, Gottfried Schneider made his first appearance with an orchestra in Bad Gastein at the age of 11 . His father Hans Schneider was a conductor and composer, his mother Ingeborg Schneider a singer. The family's artistic acquaintance with the pianist Wilhelm Backhaus , with whom Gottfried Schneider was allowed to perform violin sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms, was formative for the early years . After initial studies at the Mozarteum Salzburg and the Conservatory in Nuremberg , Gottfried Schneider was a junior student at the Munich Conservatory with Otto Büchner (1965–67). The Abitur at the Gymnasium Casimirianum in Coburg was followed by several years of study with Max Rostal in Cologne and Bern as well as a complementary study visit with Ivan Galamian in New York. During this time Gottfried Schneider also attended lectures and seminars in German, philosophy and musicology (with Christoph Wolff ) at the University of Erlangen .

Rudolf Serkin brought him to his Marlboro Music Festival in the USA after winning the Brothers Busch Prize . There he met the violinist Sandor Vegh , who became his mentor. As his successor, Gottfried Schneider held a master class for violin and chamber music at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf from 1980 to 1991 . In 1991 he was appointed to a professorship for violin at the University of Music and Theater in Munich . In addition to his teaching activities (until 2018), he also directed the university's chamber orchestra until his retirement in 2013.

His concert activities as a soloist and chamber musician have taken the violinist to several continents. Wolfgang Sawallisch called him "... one of the very few German violinists of his generation of international format".

An important place in Gottfried Schneider's concert repertoire is the interpretation of the sonatas and partitas for solo violin by Johann Sebastian Bach . After early recordings (Deutsche Grammophon 1977), a complete recording of the cycle was made by Oehms Classics in 2011/2012. In this context, Gottfried Schneider also worked scientifically on the problems of interpretation of these works and received his doctorate in 2016 for his dissertation "Johann Sebastian Bach, Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin: Aspects of Performance on the Instrument" at the University of Malta.

In addition to numerous CD productions of forgotten musical works (violin concertos by Dohnanyi , Hermann Goetz , Adolf Busch , Kurt Weill, and others), he has often been involved in premieres and premieres for the works of important contemporary composers (violin concertos by BA Zimmermann , Lutoslawski , Ligeti , Rihm ) .

Prizes and awards

Gottfried Schneider is the winner of national (national youth music competition , German music competition , concerts of young artists ) and international ( Carl Flesch , London; Jeunesses Musicales , Belgrade) competitions.
