Anton Hawelka

Anton Hawelka , Polish Antoni Hawełka (born January 17, 1840 in Kęty ; † January 14, 1894 ) was a Polish merchant and restaurateur .

Life

Since the industrial law of 1860 allowed free professional practice in Galicia , Hawelka first worked as a commercial assistant in Krakow companies such as J. Wentzl before he became a businessman and restaurateur.

In 1876 he started his own business and opened at Rynek 46 his grocery store "Pod Palma" ( Under the palm ). He became successful and the company expanded by opening a restaurant at Rynek 35 . There he ran a typical and popular breakfast shop for the time.

Popular products were all kinds of sandwiches. There was also a vodka and wine store as well as French cognac . Hawelka became known outside of Krakow and abroad. He supplied the Greek and Viennese courts. Due to the high quality of his products and services he was awarded the title of imperial purveyor to the court .

Hawelka financed the renovation of the St. Anton chapel in St. Mary's Church from its own resources . He died with no offspring and was buried in the Rakowicki cemetery. He had made his commercial assistant Franz Macharski his heir, who successfully continued A. Hawełka .
