Anton Nägele (born January 15, 1876 in Straßdorf , † March 3, 1947 in Ellwangen ) was a German historian and theologian.

Life

Nägele was the son of the postman from Straßdorf, a trained master tailor. Ordained a priest in 1899, he received his doctorate in 1902 with a treatise on the Greek church father John Chrysostom . Nägele held various positions in the school service before he went to the secondary school in Schwäbisch Gmünd as a high school professor in 1918 . But in 1923 he had to stop teaching for health reasons.

Nägele presented over 300 publications, mainly of a historical nature, on a wide variety of topics, in particular on the local history of Schwäbisch Gmünd, Ellwangen , Ulm-Wiblingen and Riedlingen . The large monograph on the Gmünder Heilig-Kreuz-Münster (1925) is of particular importance . As part of the Corpus catholicorum he edited the malleus in haeresim Lutheranam (1524) by Johann Fabri .

He was buried in Straßdorf. The majority of his collected works of art, including picture panels, wooden sculptures, small and folk art pieces as well as altar items, were sold to the museum of the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd by Nägele's sister in 1947. With the help of external experts, the total value of the estate was set at 19,300 Reichsmarks, of which 11,557 RM went to the antiquities collection, 4,045 RM to the art books and 3,698 RM to the rest of the library with its 6,000 volumes. In order to save the sister property losses due to the prospective currency reform, the parties agreed that the purchase price should have a value of 6,917 grams of fine gold.
