Anton Nigl

Anton Nigl (born February 3, 1928 in Judendorf , Leoben municipality ) is a former Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and union secretary. He was a member of the Federal Council from 1979 to 1989 and its President in the second half of 1989.

education and profession

Nigl attended elementary school in Judendorf-Seegraben from 1934 to 1938 and then switched to secondary school in Donawitz from 1938 to 1942 . He graduated from secondary school in Bruck an der Mur between 1942 and 1943 and then attended the forest ranger school in Ort near Gmunden from 1943 to 1944. He served in World War II in 1945 and was a Soviet prisoner of war for several months. After his return from the war, he continued attending the local forest ranger school from 1947 to 1948. In 1951 he passed the state examination for forest protection and technical auxiliary service. Nigl worked professionally between 1948 and 1949 as an agricultural and forest worker, after which he worked from 1950 to 1953 as a forester and forester. He became secretary of the private employees' union in 1953 and worked in this profession until 1988.

Politics and functions

Nigl joined the Austrian People's Party and became a member of the Austrian Workers' Association (ÖAAB). He worked in the ÖAAB from 1964 to 1989 as state finance officer of the ÖAAB Styria and from 1971 to 1988 he was President of the Styrian Chamber for Workers and Employees in Agriculture and Forestry. He also worked from 1972 to 1987 as president of the Austrian Chamber of Laborers and from 1967 to 1981 he was regional chairman of the Christian trade union group in the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions. Furthermore, from 1964 to 1973 he was chairman of the regional office committee of the agricultural and forestry social insurance institute of the regional office of Styria. He represented the ÖVP from 1965 to 1978 as a member of the Styrian Landtag and was a member of the Federal Council from May 31, 1979 to December 31, 1989. Between July 1, 1989 and December 31, 1989, he was President of the Federal Council.
