Anton Thadäus Johann Nepomuk Stamitz (baptized November 27, 1750 in Deutschbrod (Německý Brod); † 1798 or 1809 probably in Paris or Versailles ) was a German violinist and classical composer .

Life

Anton Stamitz and his brother Carl received their first violin lessons from their father Johann Stamitz . After his early death, the two brothers were trained by Christian Cannabich . Both became violinists in the famous Mannheim court orchestra at an early age.

Anton visited Paris with his brother in 1770 and settled there, from 1782 to 1789 he played in the royal chapel at Versailles and obtained the title of "ordinaire de la musique du roi". He was Rodolphe Kreutzer's violin teacher . On May 25, 1780, at the age of 13, he successfully performed one of Anton Stamitz's violin concertos at the Concert spirituel .

From 1789 he was mentally ill, his last known appearance was in October 1789, in the former Hotel des Cardinal Richelieu , where he gave a benefit concert for his own benefit. Nothing is known about Stamitz's further life after 1798; he probably died in Paris or Versailles. In 1809 his widow applied for a pension.
