Antoni Chapel
The so-called Antonikapelle is located at the southern exit of the village, directly on the main street in the Burgenland market town of Großhöflein . The Roman Catholic chapel was donated by Princess Maria Octavia Esterházy in 1730 and is consecrated to St. Anthony of Padua .
history
At the end of the 16th century, a column with a statue of St. Anthony of Padua, who is venerated as the patron saint of travelers, was erected next to the post station in Großhöflein. Princess Maria Octavia Esterházy had a baroque chapel built on the site of the Antoni Column, the cornerstone of which, according to the inscription, was laid in 1730 and was only consecrated in 1767 due to construction interruptions.
A total restoration took place from 1970 to 1972 and a renovation from 2015, which was concluded with a mass and blessing on October 2, 2016.
description
The small baroque building with a transept , a flat closed apse with sloping corners and a turret with a pointed spire over the entrance front faces south (west). The outer walls are structured by gray pilaster strips . There is a figural niche with the statue of St. Anthony above the rectangular main portal. The three-bay, groin-vaulted main nave is joined by the transept with a barrel vault and a square vault in the center . In this transept vault there is a ceiling fresco in the Rococo style , which shows God the Father and the angels surrounding him on banks of clouds and represents a view of the sky. A wrought-iron grille separates the choir and the transept from the nave .
The main altar comes from the Rococo and has a frame attachment and sacrificial passage portals. In the central niche there is a figure of the chapel patron Antonius of Padua. According to the inscription under the tabernacle relief, the altar was built in 1775. The side altars from the same period have a similar structure. In one of them there is the figure of St. Anna with her daughter Maria flanked by the hll. Donatus and Leonhard, in the other one of St. Madonna , flanked by the archangels Michael as soul weigher and Gabriel with lily as the angel of the Annunciation.
The organ gallery is a pillarless wooden structure. On the parapet there are six pictures with scenes from the legend of Antonius. From left to right: the shipwreck of Antonius near Syracuse; the Christ child appears to Antony in his monastery cell; Antonius protects his chapel in Großhöflein, which still shows a baroque onion helmet, from a storm; the donkey miracle and the conversion of a heretic; St. Anthony heals a sick person, as does the sermon to the fish. On the underside, an inscription dates the gallery including the associated, single-manual organ positive to 1748 and names the Viennese citizen Tobias Nickl as the founder.
