Antonin Duraffour

Antonin Duraffour (born June 4, 1879 in Le Plantay, Département Ain , † December 1, 1956 in Saint-Égrève ) was a French Romance studies and dialectologist.

life and work

Duraffour spent his childhood in Vaux-en-Bugey and attended high school in Bourg-en-Bresse . He first studied German in Paris, passed the Agrégation in 1894 and was a high school teacher in Gap and Avignon. From 1920 he taught at the University of Grenoble , first as a Chargé de cours, and founded the Institute for Phonetics with a focus on dialectology. In 1932 he completed his habilitation in Paris with the two Thèses Phénomènes généraux d'évolution phonétique dans les dialectes franco-provençaux d'après le parler de Vaux-en-Bugey (Ain) (Grenoble 1932) and Description morphologique avec notes syntaxiques du parler franco- provençal de Vaux (Ain) en 1919-1931 (Grenoble 1932) and became a professor at the University of Grenoble. There his most important pupil was Pierre Gardette . From 1935 to 1939 he was co-editor of the magazine Revue de linguistique romane . From 1936 to 1939 he had Algirdas Julien Greimas as a student.
