Antonio Santin
Antonio Santin (born September 9, 1895 in Rovinj , today's Croatia , † March 17, 1981 in Trieste ) was the bishop of Trieste and Capodistria from 1938 to 1975 .
Life
Antonio Santin was born on September 9, 1895 in Rovinj, which at that time belonged to Austria-Hungary . On May 1, 1918 he was ordained a priest.
On August 10, 1933, he was appointed Bishop of Rijeka . On May 16, 1938 he was appointed bishop of Trieste and Capodistria. When Trieste was occupied by the National Socialists in World War II , Santin made the vow to build a house of worship if Trieste was saved from destruction. Since the city was actually spared, Santin received from Pope John XXIII in 1959 . consent to the construction of a pilgrimage church in honor of St. Mary as a symbol of peace and unity of peoples. The church was built between 1963 and 1965 on the Monte Grisa hill near Trieste and was called Santuario Nazionale a Maria Madre e Regina . Santin inaugurated the church on May 22, 1966.
On June 28, 1975, Santin retired. He died in Trieste on March 17, 1981 at the age of 85.
