Antonio Vega Macotela

Antonio Vega Macotela (* 1979 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican sculptor and mixed media artist.

life and work

Antonio Vega Macotela studied from 2000 to 2004 at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and from 2003 to 2008 with José Miguel González Casanova . From 2011 to 2012 he continued his studies at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam.

The The Mill of Blood (2017) is the running of Antonio Vega Macotela reconstruction of a mill from the Spanish colonialists , to coin was built in Bolivia by coins. The mill wheels were kept in motion with the help of indigenous slaves. The title mill of blood refers to the blood of the slaves, which left traces in the wood of the devices of the time. Vega Macotela used the exhibition visitors at documenta 14 to operate the “blood mill”. If the visitor turned the oversized mill built in the Karlsaue , an aluminum coin was minted.

Vega Macotela has received numerous art prizes and grants and was artist in residence . He exhibited at the São Paulo Biennale , Manifesta 9 in Genk and documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens , among others .
