from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Revue des études anciennes is a university scientific journal founded in France in 1899 for the field of classical antiquity . The ISSN is 0035-2004.

history

The beginnings of the Revue des études anciennes go back to 1879, when Louis Liard and Auguste Couat from the University of Bordeaux founded the Annales de la Faculté des Lettres de Bordeaux . In 1885, the universities of Toulouse , Montpellier and Aix were joined by other universities in order to jointly establish the magazine Revue des Universités du Midi, that is, a magazine for the universities of southern France . In 1897, the epigraphist, archaeologist and historian Georges Radet (1859–1941) took over the management of the revue, which two years later in 1899 was divided into two publications: the Revue des études anciennes and the Revue des Lettres françaises et étrangère - united among the Annales de la Faculté des Lettres de Bordeaux et des Universités du Midi as a joint administrative body. While the Revue des Lettres françaises et étrangère was discontinued in 1900, the Revue des études anciennes is still published today.

Georges Radet remained head of the magazine until 1940. The following year, the editorial team, until then based at the Féret et Fils publishing house, was transferred to the Faculté des Lettres of the University of Bordeaux. William Seston took over the management for 1941. Pierre Boyancé followed him from 1942 to 1945 . From 1947 onwards, institutional management was transferred to the Dean of the Faculté des Lettres, who was initially supported by an editorial committee of five. The directors were among others Jean Audiat from 1947 to 1970, Jacques Coupry until 1977. After the restructuring of the French universities in 1968, the University of Bordeaux Montaigne was responsible for the magazine, since 2009 the management has been with Christophe Pébarthe.

Topics and selection

The focus of the journal is on ancient studies of Greco-Roman antiquity . The contributions are devoted to ancient history , epigraphy and archeology , literature and philosophy of antiquity . The possibility of publication is open to French and foreigners in the relevant fields. The editorial team tries to create a balance between the articles by established and young, recently graduated scientists. The articles go through a peer review and are only accepted for publication after appropriate reviews.

The section of the magazine devoted to reviews is divided into three categories: 1. "Notes de lecture" - brief presentations of new publications; 2. “Comptes rendus” - more extensive overviews of publications in a subject area; 3. "Lectures critiques" - detailed discussions on one or more publications that are grouped around a topic and achieve independent article quality. The revue would like to promote the scientific debate culture.
