Jean Audiat (born November 9, 1903 in Pranzac ; died April 16, 1991 in Gelos ) was a French classical archaeologist and Graecist .

Jean Audiat, son of a rhetoric teacher at the Lycée Janson de Sailly in Paris , studied humanities and, after graduating from the Agrégation, became a member of the École française d'Athènes , where he worked from 1928 to 1931. During this time he took part in the French excavations in Delphi and Delos . He then became a charge de cours at the University of Besançon . In 1937, he moved to the humanities faculty at the University of Bordeaux in the same position . This activity was interrupted by his military service at the beginning of the Second World War in the years 1939-1940. From 1947 he taught Greek literature as Maître de conférences and honorary professor until 1974 in Bordeaux. In this position, he also headed the university-based scientific journal Revue des études anciennes from 1947 to 1970 .

Jean Audiat, a member of the Association des études grecques since 1932, was an archaeologist and philologist alike. He received his doctorate in 1969 for his scientific work in the field of classical archeology: the publications of the Treasury of the Athenians in Delphi and the Gymnasium in Delos. Other focal points of his archaeological research interest were Attic ceramics in the black-figure style and their predecessors, Proto- Attic ceramics . Like archaic art, he was interested in archaic literature from Homer , to whose work he had a special relationship. But he also dedicated himself to the Greek historians, speakers and philosophers. By looking at and researching literary and material sources , he tried to grasp everyday life, mentality and religious concepts of ancient Greek society. Maurice Holleaux and Edmond Pottier were among the role models adored by Jean Audiat.
