Pierre Boyancé

Pierre Boyancé (born September 13, 1900 in Annecy , † September 20, 1976 in Six-Fours , Var ) was a French classical scholar .

Boyancé began studying Classical Philology in 1921 at the École normal supérieure (ENS) and in 1924 acquired the agrégation de lettres classiques . This was followed by a stay at the École française de Rome from 1924 to 1926. He then taught from 1928 to 1944 as maître de conférence , then as professor of Latin language and literature at the Faculté des lettres de Bordeaux and headed the Revue des études anciennes . He completed the doctorat d'État in 1936 with a thèse principale on the muse cult of the Greek philosophers and a thèse secondaire on the Somnium Scipionis . From 1945 he was a professor at the Sorbonne . From 1959 he was a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres , from 1960 to 1970 director of the École française de Rom e.

The focus was on philosophy ( Cicero , Lucretius and Epicurus ) and religion in Rome and the cult of the muses in Greek philosophy (especially in Plato ) as a religious metaphor for the phenomenon of inspiration .
