Career

Georges Radet attended the Lycée in Troyes and the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris , both institutions that prepare students for studying at one of the Grandes Écoles . In 1881 he began studying humanities at the École normal supérieure in Paris. After the agrégation with outstanding results in 1884, he was appointed a member of the École française d'Athènes that same year . He was a member of it until 1887. He directed his interests and research directly to Asia Minor . In 1885, 1886 and 1887 he made extensive trips there, sometimes accompanied by Pierre Paris or Gustave Fougères , sometimes alone. The destinations were the Taurus , the Rhodian Pereia, Lydia , the valley of the Meander , the plains of Hermos and Kaïkos . Here he found the inscriptions of three letters from the emperor Hadrian to the inhabitants of Stratonikeia- Hadrianopolis on the Kaïkos, the localization of which could be secured.

After his time at the École française, he went to the Lycée in Algiers as a teacher of history before continuing his career as a lecturer (Chargé de cours) at the University of Bordeaux in 1888 . 1892 followed the doctorate at the University of Paris with the work La Lydie et le monde grec au temps de Mermnades, 687-546 - a study in which he numerous results of his research in Asia Minor - which was also reflected in over twenty scientific articles - during the time at the École française processed. His thèse complémentaire was devoted to Macedonian colonies in Asia Minor. In 1895 he was appointed full professor of ancient history at the University of Bordeaux, and from 1899 to 1919 he was dean of the humanities faculty there. In 1899 he also took over the management of the Revue des études anciennes , which he helped to create and which he held until 1940, while he retired as a professor in 1934.

Georges Radet co-founded the École des hautes études hispaniques in 1911 and, in 1920, co-initiator of the Casa de Velázquez , a French institute abroad in Madrid owned by the Académie des Beaux-Arts . Promoting the scientific connection between Bordeaux and Spain was important to him. He also endeavored to make the University of Bordeaux a center of both general and regional importance.
