Antonio Pollaiuolo (* 1431 in Florence , † February 4, 1498 in Rome ) was an Italian sculptor , engraver and painter .

Life

Pollaiuolo's name was actually Antonio di Jacopo d'Benci del Pollaiuolo . He learned the goldsmith's trade from his father , and at times shared the workshop with his brother Piero .

Like Andrea del Verrocchio , he worked as a goldsmith , medalist , ore caster and painter. One of his paintings is the altarpiece of the Pucci family with the torture of St. Sebastian . Equally remarkable is the bronze group with the slaughter of Antaios (also called Hercules and Antaeus ). Famous, however, is the copperplate fight of the naked men ; because this is one of the first nudes that suggests a detailed study of human anatomy.

As an ore caster , Pollaiuolo, called to Rome by Pope Innocent VIII in 1484 , created the tombs for Pope Sixtus IV and Innocent VIII, both in St. Peter's Basilica .

The joint workshop of the Pollaiuolo brothers is considered to be the most important in Renaissance Florence . The son of the same name Antonios (1454 to 1509) (or was he the son of brother Piero?) Made himself known as an architect , especially through his renovation of the Strozzi Palace.

The Encyclopedia Britannica gives the date of birth “17. January 1432/33 ”, other sources are uncertain. Antonio Pollaiuolo is buried with his brother Piero in a double grave in the Roman church of San Pietro in Vincoli .
