Chapel cross around Kornelimünster

The Antoniuskapelle belongs to a family of chapels that surround Kornelimünster's abbey church of St. Kornelius and the parish church of St. Stephan on the mountain. It consists of the Antonius chapel, the St. Gangolf chapel, the only partially preserved St. Nicholas chapel and the Klauser chapel Maria im Schnee .

history

The previous building of the current chapel was first mentioned in 1718 and was triangular in shape. After a severe earthquake in which the chapel was badly damaged and had to be demolished, the abbot of Kornelimünster's imperial abbey, Karl Ludwig von Sickingen-Ebernburg, had the building rebuilt in 1756/57. This resulted in a hall building 11 meters long and approx. 6.5 meters wide. The inauguration of the church did not take place until 1781 by the then administrator of the imperial abbey Kornelimünster Cark Caspar von der Horst in the name of Saint Antonius .

There was a peculiarity in the construction of the chapel. After completion of the shell, the chapel received a bell from donations. It turned out that due to its size there was no space in the bell tower. For this reason it was left to the parish church. It still fulfills its function there today.

The Antoni-bells used today was developed by the foundry . Petit & Gebr Edelbrock from Gescher cast and consecrated on June 21, 1891.

The chapel is made of quarry stone , which is very common in the region .

After the Second World War until 1965, the chapel served the Protestant community as a place of worship.

In 1986 and the following years the chapel was restored, with exterior and interior work being performed.

Interior

Two stained glass windows from 1890/1900 with ornamental paintings were installed on both sides of the altar on June 3rd to 5th, 1891 . They were manufactured by the Winkold company in Eupen . In the right-hand windows they show Mary with the Child and Saint Anthony and on the left, Saints Maximus and Francis of Assisi .

The church ceiling is slightly vaulted. Colored ribbons divide them. The central axis has round individual images in the west-east direction. The Annunciation, Birth and Crucifixion are shown. The world ruler, accompanied by Maria and Johannes, was depicted in the semicircle of the choir ceiling. Banners of the prophets of the old covenant point to the salvation event.

The depiction of Saint Cornelius on the west gable of the gallery offers a special feature . Usually he is represented with a horn, here he is wearing a tiara , a staff and a book. The patron saint of church music, Saint Cecilia and King David with harp both flank.

Striking is a saying in Latin that begins at the gallery and surrounds the entire church (Ps. 117.24 and 1).

An Art Nouveau grille separates the gallery from the church.

To the left of the entrance is the Pietà "Sorrowful Mother". Originally there was a mural here, but it can no longer be identified.
