Anthony's Chapel in Sorsum

The Roman Catholic Antonius Chapel in the Hildesheim district of Sorsum is located between the former Sorsum mill and the new bypass road. It is dedicated to St. Anthony .

history

The chapel dates from the early 18th century and stands on Kirchenland, which from 1803 belonged to the monastery chamber of Hanover . By gifting the Sorsumer got parish St. Kunibert 1956, the land and the chapel back in their possession.

Above the entrance door of the chapel is the year 1725 and the saying “St. Antony do not let in what fields and fields can be harmful ”.

Today the chapel belongs to the parish of St. Martinus in Hildesheim - Catholic Church in the Güldenen Winkel.

Oral transmission

Oral tradition says that shortly after 1700 a woman from the former Escherde monastery - once it was said to have been a nun, another time a kitchen assistant - got lost in the formerly much denser forests of the Escherberg . After a long, but ultimately successful, search, the prior of the monastery is said to have built the chapel at the site of gratitude. The truth of this tradition is very high, because on the one hand the interior of the chapel comes from the period mentioned, on the other hand, in the popular piety of Christians, Saint Anthony is considered the patron and helper for those who have lost something valuable.
