St. Kunibert (Sorsum)
St. Kunibert is a Roman Catholic church in the Hildesheim district of Sorsum. Today it belongs to the parish of St. Martinus Hildesheim - Catholic church in the "Güldenen Winkel" in the Hildesheim deanery of the Hildesheim diocese .
history
With the establishment of the Augustinian monastery Marienrode in 1125, Bishop Berthold I von Alvensleben also transferred property in Sutterem to his foundation . This mention of Sorsum was later followed by extensive documents relating to the purchase and sale or barter ownership in Sorsum, etc. a. to the Godehardikloster (1156), to the Andreasstift (1219), but above all to the Magdalenenkloster in Hildesheim, which later owned the largest property in Hildesheim.
There is no news of the construction of a chapel in Sorsum during the Middle Ages . What is certain is that the settlement was not an independent parish, but a village chapel, which was linked as a branch church to the parish church of St. Martinus in Emmerke . St. Martinus, in turn, was under the Hildesheim ban of the old monastery on Moritzberg . The archdeacon there then exercised the patronage rights over St. Martinus in Emmerke and thus probably also over the chapel in Sorsum.
The later patronage of St. Kunibert also remains controversial for the Middle Ages. The chapel in Sorsum would have been the only church in the entire diocese of Hildesheim that was consecrated to Saint Kunibert during the Middle Ages . However, a possible relationship between the former could Archidiakon the spell Altkloster Propst consist Cuno, the under Bishop Hezilo of Hildesheim Propst the pin Hildesheim was. A sponsorship or support for the construction of the church in Sorsum by Provost Cuno, who possibly wanted to commemorate his namesake, the Holy Bishop Kunibert, with the patronage, cannot be excluded.
Like the Emmerk parish of St. Martinus, the Sorsum settlement was politically part of the tax forest . From 1557 onwards , Duke Adolf von Holstein introduced the Reformation to the entire office . From 1567 to 1609, Emmerke and Sorsum were looked after by a clergyman whose Catholic or Lutheran denomination cannot be clearly identified. However, this pastor, named Johannes Licius, was deposed after the church visitation was completed and the pastor in Emmerke was filled with a Catholic incumbent.
After the prince-bishop Maximilian Heinrich von Bayern took office , the provost of the Madalenenkloster, Caspar Leonis, donated 200 guilders to the Sorsum branch church, which enabled the Hildesheim prince-bishop to separate Sorsum from the mother parish in Emmerke with a document dated April 27, 1652 to confer the status of a parish. The right of patronage was exercised by the Magdalenenkloster, which had owned numerous properties in Sorsum since the Middle Ages.
From 1651 to 1665 the pastoral care office was directed by the Jesuit order and looked after by the pastoral care. The Reform Order had re-established the Catholic religious relations, which is also confirmed by the visitation report from 1657.
The church was enlarged in 1706. The chapel received a tower 46 years later.
The structural change with the onset of mechanization in agriculture and forestry, which shaped Sorsum in the 19th century, led to an increase in the population. This made it necessary to enlarge the church, which was planned for 1874. The expansion of the chapel, while retaining the tower and the choir, could only take place in 1887. The current temple was built in the style of Neo-Romanesque and Bishop Daniel Wilhelm Sommerwerck on May 19, 1889 consecrated .
By 1910 the population in Sorsum rose to 741 inhabitants, almost all of whom were Catholic. After the Second World War, Sorsum expanded again considerably due to the influx of displaced people. In 1955 around 1,800 inhabitants were registered, of which 1,210 were Catholic.
In 2010 the parishes of St. Martinus in Himmelsthür , St. Kunibert in Sorsum, St. Martinus in Emmerke and the Holy Family in Escherde merged to form the new parish of St. Martinus Hildesheim - Catholic Church in the "GüldenenWinkel". Since then, St. Kunibert has been a branch church of St. Martinus in Himmelsthür.
Architecture and equipment
The east-facing church , built in neo-Romanesque style, is located around 102 meters above sea level on the property at Sorsumer Hauptstrasse 36 . The painting was done from 1894 to 1896 by the history painter Eltermann. The ceiling shows the "family tree of Christ" , based on the model of Michaeliskirche in Hildesheim . The crucifix , the Mother of God and the Joseph statue from 1940 were made by the Oberammergau carver Schicher.
epitaph
The sandstone relief dates from around 1400 and is located in front of the Marien Altar. In addition to the Annunciation of Mary with a donor figure , the holy bishops Bernward , Godehard and Epiphanius as well as Saint Catherine and Saint Dorothea are shown .
Bells
During the Second World War , the bronze bells, including one from 1690, were confiscated by the Reich Ministry of Economics in order to be melted down for use in the armaments industry . In 1952 the St. Kunibert received three new bronze bells, which were consecrated to the Mother of God, St. Anthony and St. Kunibert. A year later the ringing was completed with a fourth bell. It was dedicated to the memory of those who died in the war.
