reception

Bernardo Oliveira wrote, “During the hour-long performance, in which he mixed classics such as“ On Green Dolphin Street ”and“ Summertime ”with his compositional work, Shipp demonstrated the piano as a painter surrenders himself to the canvas: With technical precision, He evokes virtuosity and haunting imagination, tonalities, rhythms and abrupt shifts, sometimes revealing ethereal arabesques, sometimes hammering the piano intensely and dramatically. In the end, the method of beauty remains: Shipp uses the piano to explore time in space. The audience, immersed and concentrated, enters. They seem to be aware that if it were possible to pinpoint a style that characterizes their work, it would be defined by, say, a conceptual stance: viewing jazz not just as a fixed genre or repertoire, but as one indefinite field of sound exploration.
