On Green Dolphin Street

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On Green Dolphin Street (also Green Dolphin Street ) is a song by the composer Bronisław Kaper with a text by Ned Washington . The song was - interpreted by Mel Tormé - intended as the title track for the film Taifun (Engl. Green Dolphin Street ), which was released in 1947. In the late 1950s, the song became a jazz standard .

Structure of the song

The song, which is in C major throughout , has the song form ABAB 'with 32 bars. The eight-bar A section consists of a memorable, chromatically descending melody, which is often underlaid with a Latin rhythm . The B or B 'section, which gives a harmoniously moving response to the quasi- modal input melody of the A section, then convey a different rhythmic feeling with a walking bass and quarter-note swing of the drums.

Other versions

The song was sung by Sarah Vaughan in the 1950s . Even Mark Murphy (1961), Anita O'Day , Carmen McRae Johnny Hartman (1972), Sheila Jordan , The Four Freshmen , Kevin Mahogany and Gabrielle Goodman recorded the song in their repertoire.

Trombonist Urbie Green recorded On Green Dolphin Street in 1955. In 1957 Barney Kessel , Ray Brown and Shelly Manne also interpreted the song instrumentally. Another early instrumental version comes from Miles Davis , who recorded it for the first time in 1958 with Cannonball Adderley , John Coltrane , Bill Evans , Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb for his film music album Jazz Track , which - based on an early version by Ahmad Jamal - the Song used for extensive improvisations. In 1960 he also consistently presented the song on his European tour. Eric Dolphy (1960) based his version on the recording by Davis from 1958, but briefly took over the function of the bass on the bass clarinet in order to break the theme down into its components afterwards. Even Albert Ayler interpreted 1963 the song at a radio recording for the Danish Broadcasting Niels Brønsted and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen with the achievements of free jazz . Sonny Rollins recorded the melody in 1965 on a live recording from the Museum of Modern Art “as a trampoline for high-altitude flights on the tenor sax”. Miles Davis, too, played the piece in the mid-1960s ( The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965 ) in such a way that one had the feeling that “the standard was gradually dissolving”.

But also other instrumentalists such as Bill Evans (1959), Oscar Peterson Trio (1962, 1968), Oscar Peterson Trio / Milt Jackson (1962), Joe Sample / Ray Brown / Shelly Manne (1976), Archie Shepp (1977), Herbie Hancock (1978), Herbie Hancock / Wayne Shorter (1979), George Benson / Count Basie Orchestra (1990), Walter Norris (1990), Joe Pass (1990), Chick Corea Akoustic Band (1990), Joe Henderson (1994) and Chick Corea / Stanley Clarke / Lenny White (2009) interpreted and recorded the song.

  • The Score (2001, with Cassandra Wilson )
