The island is known for the rock formations that surround it, which are known as the "washboard of demons" ( 鬼 の 洗濯 板 , Oni no sentakuita ) because of their long, parallel and dead straight furrows - as they can also be seen in the adjacent aerial photo on May 1, 1934 were declared a natural monument. Geologically, these were formed 7 million years ago when the sea floor rose and consist of alternating layers of harder sandstone and softer claystone , whereby the structure was formed by the stronger erosion of the claystone by the waves.

The island is characterized by a subtropical plant community ( 青島 亜 熱 帯 性 植物群落 , Aoshima anettaisei shokubutsu gunraku ) of 226 species, which is one of the northernmost such populations and was therefore declared a special natural monument of Japan on March 29, 1952 . There is a corresponding garden on the opposite side on Kyushu.

The island belongs to the Aoshima Shrine ( 青島 神社 , Aoshima-jinja ) located on it and built in 1501 in which the hunting god Hikohohodemi no mikoto ( 彦 火 火 出 見 命 ), his wife Toyotamahime no mikoto ( 豊 玉 姫 命 ) and Shiozuchi no ōkami ( 塩 筒 大 神 ), who helped the former to find the latter to be worshiped as kami . At the Motomiya ( 元 宮 , "shrine of origin") ceramics from the Yayoi period were found, which suggest that the island was the subject of religious practices at that time. In addition to the shrine buildings, there is also the Hyūga Shinwakan ( 日 向 神話 館 , "Hyūga-Mythenhaus") in which the mythology of the revered gods is represented.

District

The district of the same name Aoshima ( 青島 ) of the city of Miyazaki includes not only the island of Aoshima, but an area on the coast of the main island. Aoshima-Nishi ("Aoshima-West") is located to the west of it today. Together with other current districts of the city of Miyazaki, they formed the village of Aoshima ( 青島 村 , Aoshima- mura ) in the district of Miyazaki (before 1896, district of north ) since the modernization of the municipal regulations in 1889 -Naka ) of Miyazaki Prefecture. In 1951 the village was incorporated into the prefecture capital Miyazaki, which has been an independent district since 1924. Aoshima Station (Aoshima-eki) is located in Aoshima 2-chōme on the Nichinan Line of the JR Kyūshū .
