Ape, Beck & Brinkmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ape, Beck & Brinkmann , ABB for short , was a folk rock group from Dortmund founded in 1979 .

Band history

Ape, Beck & Brinkmann was founded in 1979 by Fred Ape, Klaus Beck, Peter Brinkmann and the sound engineer Klaus-Werner Wollnowski. The group quickly became the figurehead of the alternative German folk rock scene. ABB was later expanded by Rudi Mika and Klaus Heidrich. ABB's focus was on German, critical texts. The lyrics were mainly from Fred Ape.

The song Rauchzeichen (1979) became a secret hit with over 100,000 pressings. This song can be found today as one of the most famous environmental songs in school books. The text is based on the prophecy known as the " prophecy of the Cree " that mankind will only discover that money cannot be eaten when nature is completely destroyed. Rauchzeichen was also released in the same year by the befriended band Cochise on their first album, also called Rauchzeichen , with an intro composed by Pit Budde .

On December 19, 1987, ABB gave its farewell concert in front of 1,800 fans in the "Pedagogical Center (PZ) Hombruch " in Dortmund .

Between 1997 and 1999 there were again around 30 ABB concerts. In October 1999 the ABB singer Peter Brinkmann died of acute heart failure.

Fred Ape performed on songs on a summer evening in 2009 and 2011 .

Klaus-Werner Wollnowski died at the end of 2019.
