Paralia Apella ( Greek Παραλία Απελλά ), also Apella Beach , is located on the east coast of the Greek island of Karpathos in the area of the village of Volada . With its turquoise-blue water and the white pebble-sand beach, the crescent-shaped bay surrounded by rugged cliffs is a well-known postcard and calendar motif.

Infrastructure

Until 1992 the bay could only be reached via a small footpath and by sea. Today it can be reached via an asphalted cul-de-sac (since 2007) that serpentines from the main road Karpathos (city) - Spoa down into the bay. Since 1996 there has been a tavern and overnight accommodation in the bay, as well as parasol rental.

Attractions

About 350 meters above the tavern is the Byzantine cave church Ágios Loukás , the interior of which was originally completely painted. In the course of a generous restoration, archaeologists put the remains of the wall back together and painted the barrel vault with a brick-red paint. During the work, traces of old frescoes were uncovered: A pale red double cross on the semicircular front, to the left of which you can see an archangel. The faded frescoes inside show u. a. John the Baptist and the wedding in Cana .
