Volada ( Greek Βωλάδα ( f. Sg. )) Is a village in the south of the Greek island of Karpathos .

location

The village is located in the center of the southern part of the island on the road connecting the east and west coast. The village of Othos is about 1.5 kilometers southwest , Aperi immediately to the east. The distance to the city of Karpathos is about 7 kilometers southeast. The scattered settlement of Lastos is about 2 kilometers north.

The area of the local community Volada extends northward from the village, for example from Kyra Panagia on the east coast to the beach of Apella (Παραλία Απελλάς). The Northeast is occupied by the Lastos massif with the largest elevations on the island. The highest peaks are the Kali Limni (Καλή Λίμνη, 1215 meters), the Profitis Ilias (Προφίτης Ηλίας, 1168 meters) and further south of the Stroumboulas (Στρούμπουλας, 1118 meters). Adjacent local communities are Aperi in the east, Othos in the southwest, Pyles and Mesochori in the west and Spoa in the north. Further south is an exclave that is also part of the local community.

administration

From 1948 until the municipal reform in 1997 , Volada had the status of a rural municipality (Κοινότητα Βωλάδας Kinotita Voladas ). The Lastos settlement received official recognition in 1991. In 1997, seven other rural communities were amalgamated to form what was then Karpathos, today's Karpathos district . The former municipalities of the island were merged through the administrative reform in 2010 to form the new municipality of Karpathos (Δήμος Καρπάθου Dimos Karpathou ).

History and sights

The area around today's Voláda was particularly important in antiquity as well as in the Middle Ages. According to archaeologists, there was once a temple of Apollo in the district of Píni , and an acropolis could originally have been built on the site of the later Cornaro castle. During the Venetian rule, the Cornaro trading family built a large fortress, the Cornaro Castle . Only a few remains of the wall are left today. Today, the Stavrós Chapel (Holy Cross Chapel), built in 1972, is located on this square , striking for its white brickwork and red dome. In and around Voláda and the northwestern district of Píni there are several other smaller chapels.

Others

From Volada, an asphalt road leads up to the Lástos plateau , the starting point for hikes to Kalí Límni , the highest mountain on the island at 1215 m.
