Aperi ( Greek Απέρι ( n. Sg. )) Is a village in the southeast of the Greek island of Karpathos , about six kilometers northwest of the city of Karpathos , the capital of the island.

The village, together with three other settlements, forms the local community of the same name (Τοπική Κοινότητα Απερίου Topiki kinotita Aperiou ) in the municipality of Karpathos (Δημοτική Ενότητα Καρπάθου Dimotiki Enotita Karpathos of the municipality of Karpathos) .

The townscape of Aperi is characterized by the white houses and stately villas with the red tile roofs. Aperi is considered the "richest" village on the island, as many wealthy "American returnees" or their family members live here.

history

On the Achata beach (Παραλία Αχάτας), northeast of Aperi, ancient building remains, graves and ceramics document the settlement from the middle of the Geometric period to at least the end of the Hellenistic period . One of the most important fortresses on the island was located in the same area in the Middle Ages.

The city was built in the Middle Ages when the islanders withdrew from the coastal regions inland to protect themselves from the constant pirate attacks and founded new settlements there. Aperi was the island's capital until 1894 and is still the seat of the bishop of Karpathos and Kasos today .

The monastery of Agios Georgios Vaston (Μονή του Αγίου Γεωργίου των Βατσών), about 2 kilometers southwest of Aperi, was the first school on Karpathos; it served as a school for wealthy families even before the Greek Revolution . After the Second World War , the monastery housed a boarding school for the Archdiocese of Karpathos and Kasos for some time.

administration

Aperi received shortly after the annexation of the Dodecanese to Greece the status of a rural community (Κοινότητα Απερίου Kinotita Aperiou ). The coastal town of Kyra Panagia as well as Katapodi and Myrtonas were recognized as Aperis settlements in 1981. With the implementation of the municipal reform in 1997 , seven other rural municipalities were merged to form what was then the municipality of Karpathos, the current municipality of Karpathos . Due to the administrative reform in 2010 , the former municipalities of the island were merged to form the new municipality of Karpathos (Δήμος Καρπάθου Dimos Karpathou ).
