Menetes ( Greek Μενετές ( f. Pl. )) Is a village in the south of the Greek island of Karpathos . Together with three other settlements, it forms the local community of the same name (Τοπική Κοινότητα Μενετών Topiki Kinotita Meneton ). The airport Karpathos is in the field of the local community.

location

The village is located in the south of Karpathos at 315 meters above sea level on the connecting road between the city of Karpathos on the east coast and Arkasa on the west coast. The island airport is located in the very south of the island about 8 kilometers away. The local community Menetes (Τοπική Κοινότητα Μενετών) occupies the extreme southeast of the island. With an area of 44,610 square kilometers, it is the largest local community in the Karpathos municipality (Δημοτική Ενότητα Καρπάθου) and the second largest in the Karpathos municipality. Adjacent local communities are Arkasa in the west, Othos and the exclave of Volada in the north and the urban area of Karpathos in the northeast.

administration

Menetes formed an independent rural community since 1948 (Κοινότητα Μενεταί Kinotia Menete ). Agios Ioannis Afiarti, Kypos Afiarti and Lakki were recognized and incorporated as settlements in 1981. Together with seven other rural communities, the merger took place in 1997 to form what was then Karpathos, today's Karpathos district . Due to the administrative reform in 2010 , the former municipalities of the island were merged to form the new municipality of Karpathos (Δήμος Καρπάθου Dimos Karpathou ). Menetes has since had the status of a local community (Τοπική Κοινότητα).

View of the village on Menetés

There are several churches and chapels in Menetés:

  • The main church Kímisis tis Theotókou (Eng. Maria Dormition), built in 1845 and consecrated to the Mother of God, stands on the edge of a steep rock in the north of the village. The Feast of the Assumption on August 15 is a special holiday in Menetés (as in Olympos and Apéri) and is celebrated in and around the church as a folk festival. The marble columns inside the church come from the early Christian (5th / 6th century) basilica Agía Anastasía in Arkássa.
  • The Evangelístria chapel is only a few meters below the Kímisis tis Theotókou and served until 1950 as the ossuary of the cemetery formerly located in front of the church. A small local museum has been located there for several years.
  • The Chapel of Agios Antónius contains frescoes from the Byzantine period that are more than eight hundred years old.
  • The church of Agíos Spirídonas is at the southern end of the city, also built on a rock.
  • The Christ Church was built around three hundred years ago.
  • The Profítís Ilías summit church is located on a slope above the village . It is worth mentioning the unusual iconostasis with a skull under the cross.
  • The chapel of Agios Mámmas is located in the suburb of Exíles , about three kilometers southwest of Menetés . The white rotunda was probably built by Syrian pirates as early as the 9th century and was only later used as a chapel. The frescoes inside are from the 14th century. The low door and the three only small hatches on the edge of the dome let the interior only be dimly lit with daylight. The roof in front of the entrance is more recent.
