Tauzieher or "The Tauzieher" is a sculpture made of shell limestone that was erected between 1910 and 1911 at the Rheinauhafen in Cologne . In 1980 it was one of the first cultural monuments to be placed under monument protection in Cologne.

history

On the occasion of the exhibition of the Association of Cologne Artists in the Cologne Flora in 1908 , the sculptor Nikolaus Friedrich , who lives in Charlottenburg but was born in Cologne , exhibited a figure that was very well received in art circles. Considerations to install a greatly enlarged copy in an attractive place in Cologne led to a collection of Cologne art lovers. And, after the amount achieved in this way was not sufficient, for the approval of a city grant of 10,000 marks at the meeting of the city council on March 23, 1910.

The choice of location fell on a free space on the Holzmarkt in front of the new Cologne harbor. The place to be prepared was to the right of the swing bridge and at the foot of the Malakoff tower . After the construction of the scaffolding to erect the statue began on September 21, 1910, a local reporter wrote:

“The Herculean naked man has climbed onto the post that develops from rock that is not divided below and, bent over, pulls the rope up to fasten it to the post. The legs clasp the wood and while the right one tries with all her might to pull up the big rope, the left one holds on to the pole. "

The tug- of -war was unveiled on March 4, 1911. The monument is around 6½ meters high, and thus around twice as large as the original statue in the exhibition in 1908, with the base taking up a little more than half. The tug of war was the first free sculpture in Cologne's public space.

In September 1911, the unknown author of a poem addressed the contradiction of the naked tug of war, with the message symbolized by him that anyone who likes to work can gain wealth:

"" Dä "Tauzieher" or E sleep comparison, .... "Now don't joke" säht drop da Kaplan, "The" Tauzieher "is only supposed to show you that prosperity arises with everyone who is lust and love for work own! ”.... Suckisch, we’re eating the cheese, I haven’t met anyone at the wood mate! CJ ""

Freely translated:

"" The "tug of war" or a bad comparison, ... "Now don't joke," said the chaplain, "The" tug of war "is only supposed to show you that prosperity comes about with everyone who has a desire and love for work ! "... As naked as the guy is, I have never met anyone at the Holzmarkt!" "

Together with the swing bridge and the railings on the quay wall was Tauzieher , on 1 July 1980 (no. 66) corresponding to the only recently entered into force law as a historical monument.
