Joseph Theele

Joseph Theele (born April 3, 1889 in Halle , † February 19, 1944 in Fulda ) was a German librarian and one of the founders of scientific binding . From 1927 until his death he was director of the Fulda State Library .

Life

Theele was the son of a teacher and organist. He studied German and Latin at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Halle (Saale) . There doctorate he in 1915 to Dr. phil. with the dissertation The manuscripts of the Benedictine monastery St. Petri in Erfurt . From 1918 he was an intern at the university library in Halle and was responsible for the "Hallische Universitätszeitung". From 1920 to 1927 he worked at the University and City Library of Cologne , where he set up the so-called "binding cabinet". There he is considered to be one of the founders of scientific binding science. From 1927 he was director of the state library in Fulda and part-time director of the city archive. With the beginning of the Second World War, he mainly devoted himself to securing the archivists.

Theele had been a member of the NSDAP since May 1, 1937 ( membership number 5,398,803). From 1942 until his death he was head of the acquisitions department at the Kassel State Library. As such, he was informed about the unlawful procurement of archival material and was responsible for it. He not only asked for the delivery of looted Jewish property, but also personally participated in the book robbery from the library of the Frauenberg monastery .

He died in February 1944 at the age of 54. His estate is in the holdings of the Fulda State Library.
