Apitzsch (family)
Apitzsch is the name of a family who once owned the former Gut Apitzsch in what is now the city of Leipzig .
The name Apitzsch has been known around today's Leipzig since at least 1337. It is of Sorbian origin. There are different versions for deriving the name:
- The name is derived from the Germanized short form of the old German Adalbert or Albert ("shining through nobility") or Albrecht .
- The name is derived from the Germanic tribe "Adal ...". That means "inherited nobility".
- The name stem is derived from "Apecz".
The Apitzschgasse, named after one of the family's ancestors, in the Connewitz district of Leipzig still exists today . The name for this street was given in honor of the construction work of the landlord Apitzsch after a major fire in Connewitz in the 18th century.

Already in 1337 burgrave Albert the Elder of Leisnig handed over the monastery 3 Joch Wald next to the Apitzschwiese ,“ quae volgariter nuncupantur Herin Apecz Holcz ”, ... and in 1529 Christof Blasbalgk von Lößnig sold the monastery a Werder (= floodplain in the river ) Land "which the Pleiße in front of our Gut Lesnig on the Apicz near Kunawicz ..." "
The name Apitzsch has changed a lot over the centuries. In the church registers of the Eutritzsch community, the name is written alternately with “p” or “b” and with or without “z” even within an entry.
