The Apogonini are a tribe of the cardinalfish (Apogonidae), which is found near the coast in all tropical and subtropical seas.
features
Apogonini species are small cardinalfish that are reddish to brownish in color, but sometimes also almost transparent. Blackish or brownish markings can be seen on the head and body. The caudal fin is forked or rounded with 15 branched fin rays . The hypuralia 1 + 2 and 3 + 4 have grown together. The upper and lower jaws and the palate are covered with slender teeth, but they can also be missing on the palatine . Only one species has larger fangs on the premaxillary and lower jaw. The supramaxillary, a bone of the upper jaw, is missing. Six infraorbitalia (eye ring bones). The scales of the sideline each have a pore on top and one on the bottom. Burrs and edges of the Vorkiemendeckels (Preoperculum) are sawn smooth or slightly. The stomach and intestines are light (not in two species).
- Fin formula : dorsal 1 VI, dorsal 2 I / 9; Anal II / 8, pectoral 11–16, caudal 9 + 8.
- Scale formula : SL 23-25.
- Gill rake : 9–19.
- Vertebrae 10 + 14.
