Apollo Island is a small and ice-covered island off the Princess Astrid Coast of Queen Maud Land, East Antarctica . It is located around 30 km east-northeast of the island of Blåskimen in the northwest section of the Fimbul Ice Shelf . The South African SANAE station is located about 16 km west-southwest of the island .
The name of the island appears for the first time on South African maps from 1969. It is probably named after Apollo , among other things god of youth and beauty from Greek mythology.
