Apollonius (saint)
Apollonius , also called the apologist , († September 21, 184 or 185 in Rome ) was a Christian apologist , martyr and saint .
Apollonius was a Roman citizen who was denounced as a Christian by his slave to Tigidius Perennis , prefect of the imperial bodyguard. Perennis then had Apollonius interrogated in order to induce him to apostate from Christianity, whereupon Apollonius delivered a defensive speech before the Roman Senate , which is highly praised by St. Jerome and in the acts of martyrdom of Apollonius, but nevertheless did not prevent the Senate from the death penalty to decide against him. Apollonius was then beheaded.
The feast day of the saint is April 21 in the Catholic, April 18 in the Protestant and July 23 in the Orthodox Church. His bones are said to have been brought to Bologna and his head to Ebora, Portugal.
