Band history

Apollyon's Sun came into being after the end of Thomas "Warrior" Gabriel Fischer's previous volume, Celtic Frost . In 1994 Fischer got a call from guitarist Erol Daaé about a production; as they went well together, Fischer took him on in a music project that developed into a real band after a few months. The first rehearsal of Apollyon's Sun took place in the late spring of 1995, with Stephen Priestly assisting her with rehearsals during the first few months. After Apollyon Sun existed for three months, the band was asked to participate in the sampler In Memory of. . . Celtic Frost asked and recorded the Celtic Frost cover Babylon Fell as their first piece of music ; originally the band wanted to contribute Procreation (of the Wicked) or Dethroned Emperor , but they were already taken. Fischer had contacted Dwell Records after he had learned about the planned sampler and wanted to inquire about it by fax. In their early days the band also arranged pieces such as Control by Traci Lords , L'instant X by Mylène Farmer and Eric "IQ" Gray's Fight Fashion and rehearsed Celtic Frost's Procreation (of the Wicked) after Sepultura's arrangement as well as Dethroned Emperor , Mesmerized and unreleased Celtic -Frost titles like Pearl of Love and Primeval Rapture . Fischer described her EP, which was released in 1998, as the first real sign of life. In 2000 the debut album Sub and the EP Sub Sampler followed .

According to Fischer, an originally planned continuation of the band is ruled out.

style

While Frank Stöver attests that Babylon Fell still has a typical metal guitar sound, but not the first EP, Fischer sees no departure from the metal sound. Compared to the EP, the symbiosis with the samples on the album is more homogeneous, according to Fischer. He was not interested in the cold and sterility of the industrial ; In addition to drum and bass loops , live drums and bass were also used to achieve a warmer sound closer to hard rock . The sound is based on the roots of Celtic Frost, but Fischer emphasizes that Apollyon Sun is a band that was founded in the 1990s and reflects this time. For Götz Kühnemund it was clear from the outset that “[n] of course […] it was clear from the start that APOLLYON SUN would have little to do with Celtic Frost in terms of style - I would not have expected that the band would be so experimental. First of all, I am surprised at how much electronic influences and sound gadgets have been processed here, which of course are at the expense of the metal element. Even Tom's vocals hardly have anything 'metallic' about them, although they sound quite morbid and 'nasty'. ”According to his colleague Boris Kaiser,“ the atmosphere of the record can be described as a direct continuation of old Frost discs ”, while the musical stylistic devices Are “completely different”. In contrast to bands like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry, the band “lacks any accessibility […] when processing electronic elements. Instead, tracks like 'Dweller' or 'Reefer Boy' require a lot of patience. ”The“ spherical and deeply atmospheric ” Slender sounded“ like film music ”.

The band also recorded new versions of Hellhammer and Celtic Frost tracks, with Fischer radically reworking Hellhammer's Messiah with that of the wall of voodoo track recorded for the Celtic Frost album Into the Pandemonium , Mexican Radio compared; this decision confused some listeners because of Fischer's distance from his former band Hellhammer, which he justified with their absurdity.
