The aurora-Philippines wood mouse ( Apomys aurorae ) is a rodent species from the genus of the Philippines wood mice ( Apomys ) in the family of long-tailed mice (Muridae). The species epithet refers to the province of Aurora on the Philippine island of Luzon , where this species is endemic . It was only discovered in 2006 and scientifically described in 2011 .
features
The Aurora-Philippines wood mouse is a large species of mouse with large eyes. The total length is 262 to 295 mm, the tail length 129 to 153 mm, the ear length 18 to 21 mm and the weight 58 to 92 g. The soft fur is reddish brown on the top and white or almost white with an orange wash on the underside. The tail is two-colored, dark on the top and almost white on the underside.
distribution
The Aurora-Philippines wood mouse is only documented from the Mingan Mountains in the province of Aurora on Luzon, where this species occurs at altitudes between 733 and 1677 m. On the transect between 902 and 1476 m it represents the most common type of mouse.
habitat
The aurora-Philippines wood mouse inhabits dipterocarp forests in the low-lying areas, mountain forests and moss-covered forests.
Way of life
The Aurora-Philippines wood mouse is nocturnal and foraging on the ground. The diet consists of earthworms, other invertebrates and probably seeds. At medium altitudes it occurs sympatric with Apomys minganensis .
Hazard and protection
The aurora-Philippines wood mouse is currently not on the IUCN Red List . However, this species is not considered to be endangered because its habitat is still largely undisturbed.
