The palmar aponeurosis and the superficial muscles of the palm

The palmar aponeurosis is a tendon plate in the palm of the hand . It is the continuation of the tendon of the long palm muscle ( musculus palmaris longus ). However, this is not present in around 20% of all people. Then the palmar aponeurosis is only stretched by the short palm muscle ( musculus palmaris brevis ). It is also known as the palmar tendon or aponeurosis palmaris .

function

The tense palmar aponeurosis primarily has a protective function for the underlying nerves and vessels . In addition, it serves as the origin of the musculus palmaris brevis and numerous muscles as an attachment.

pathology

A knot-like hardening (fibrosis) with shortening of the aponeurosis and flexion contractures, especially of the ring and little fingers, is known as Dupuytren's disease . This fibromatosis is more common in middle-aged men. Risk factors are nicotine and alcohol consumption; occasionally there are further fibromatoses.
