Roquefavour Aqueduct
The Aqueduct of Roquefavour is an aqueduct of the Canal de Marseille, 393 m long and reaching a maximum height of 82.65 m . It is mainly located in the municipality of Ventabren in the Bouches-du-Rhône department , and to a small extent in that of Aix-en-Provence . It brings water from the Durance River to Marseille as drinking water .
The aqueduct crosses the valley of the Arc River and thus at the same time the road from Aix-en-Provence to Berre-l'Étang and a railway line. Construction began in 1841 and was completed in 1847. The two Swiss Franz Mayor de Montricher and William Fraisse (1803–1885) worked as senior engineers . The Pont du Gard, about half as high, served as an ancient model . Since 1975 the water of the aqueduct no longer flows openly in a channel , but in a pipe with a diameter of 2.20 m. The aqueduct has been under monument protection as a monument historique since 2005 .
