Aquarium filter
An aquarium filter is a water filter that has the task of cleaning the water in an aquarium in such a way that solid waste materials to be filtered out are retained.
A filter that has been used for a long time ("retracted") , on whose filter material microorganisms have settled, supports the conversion of nitrogen products in the aquarium , during which, among other things, the fish-toxic ammonia is oxidized to nitrate ( nitrification ).
After the water has been filtered, it is returned to the basin.
Filter types
Aquarium enthusiasts ( aquarists ) have a range of different filter types to choose from. The aquarium size and the space available play a role in the choice.
People who are maintaining an aquarium for the first time usually opt for an internal filter . External filters are considered to be more effective and easier to maintain. Another advantage is that you can influence the water values in the desired way with the external filter by choosing the filter material. Thus, by the addition of peat of the pH of the water is lowered. Occasionally, aquarists even use different types of filters at the same time.
A major disadvantage of external filters is that the water leaves the aquarium. If a hose connection loosens or something leaks, the aquarium can be pumped out and lead to water damage at the installation site.
The filters can be divided into the following types:
