Aquascope

An aquascope is an underwater vision device . It is used to explore the underwater world, often from dry land, boat or ship. It eliminates surface reflections and thus allows for better visibility, as the water and light conditions allow. An aquascope can be used to observe reefs , inspect piers and Secchi discs , and for many other underwater explorations. It is also used in education to observe plants, animals, and subsurface habitats of rivers, lakes, and seas.

A more advanced version, an underwater telescope , was patented by Sarah Mather in 1845 and allows ships to explore the depths of the ocean. For this purpose, a lamp operated with camphin was lowered into the water in a glass ball. The device was used, among other things, to examine ship hulls from the deck. In 1864 Sarah Mather improved her invention to discover submarines and spar torpedoes of the southern states in the American Civil War .
