Ara Bacchi ( Latin : 'Altar des Bacchus', also Elterstein or Altarstein ) was the name of a rock locatednear Bacharach in the Rhine , which was interpreted in the 19th century as a Roman sacrificial stone dedicated tothe god Bacchus . It was onlyvisibleat low tide and was a sign of a good wine harvest.

Ara Bacchi belonged to a group of rocky cliffs and rock heads that were blown away when the Rhine was regulated in 1850, as they represented a danger to shipping as shallows lying scattered in the fairway . Depending on the water level and visibility, the rocks could hardly be seen. A plan of the Prussian Rheinstrom-Bauverwaltung differentiates the small and the large altar stone as well as the altar bench in between . The 1850 blasts removed 1,275 cubic feet (39 cubic meters ). Between 1864 and 1866 an additional 2,413 cubic feet (75 cubic meters) were cleared using a diving shaft.
