Arabinoxylan is a hemicellulose that occurs in plant cell walls, both in woody plants and in cereal plants . As indigestible components of food , they belong to the dietary fiber group . Arabinoxylan consists of copolymers of two pentoses , arabinose and xylose .

structure

Arabinoxylans consist of numerous catenary 1,4-linked xylose - monomers . Many of these xylose units are simply substituted with 2- or 3- or twice with 2,3-linked arabinose . Depending on the respective fine structure and chain length, arabinoxylans belong to the insoluble or soluble dietary fibers.

Functions

Arabinoxylans are an essential structural component of plant cells. They are also the carrier substance for ferulic acid and other phenolic acids , which are covalently bound to arabinoxylan. Phenolic acids are u. a. involved in plant defense mechanisms, e.g. B. Fight fungal infections.

Arabinoxylans may have health benefits for humans. The phenolic acids bound to arabinoxylans are also relevant, as they act as antioxidants . Arabinoxylans also influence the iron balance and, due to their viscosity, have an effect on the intestinal function .
