The Araburg stands on the Araberg in the village of Laabach in the market town of Kaumberg in the Lilienfeld district in southern Lower Austria . The ruin of a hilltop castle stands at an altitude of 800 m above sea level. A. in the Triestingtal . The castle complex is a listed building .
history
The name comes from the Araburg family, which means something like Adlerburg. The facility was built in the 12th century and expanded continuously until the 17th century. In 1528, Sebald Pögl the Younger acquired the Araburg, who from then on called himself von Reifenstein and Arberg . During the first Turkish siege in 1529, it was a refuge for the local population. It also played a role in the course of the wars of religion between the Catholics and Protestants , and so it has been owned by the Lilienfeld Abbey since 1625 under various owners, including the Ruckendorffer, for example . However, it was completely destroyed during the second Turkish siege in 1683 and has remained in ruins ever since .
It was renovated in the 1960s , after being further destroyed in World War II .
The ruin can only be reached on foot, but is still a popular excursion area in the Vienna Woods because of the 27-meter-high keep, which was converted into a lookout tower in 1901 . A panoramic view of the Schneeberg and large parts of the foothills of the Alps is possible from the control room. A Burgstüberl and the summer games, the medieval market “Georgsfest” and numerous other events complete the offer for visitors. It is also possible to stay overnight at the castle. In recent years the Araburg has also established itself as a popular location for wedding celebrations.
