The Working Group Alpine Wasserkraft ( AGAW for short ) is a non-profit association whose task it is to promote the generation of energy from hydropower . AGAW was founded on July 13, 1999 in Landshut . Operators of hydropower plants from Germany, Austria and Switzerland were involved as founding members.

She organizes the event Hydraulic Engineering in Motion .

Goals and Activities

The association does not see hydropower exclusively in connection with water ecology . Rather, hydropower should be strengthened as a renewable energy in order to be able to achieve the Kyoto Protocol goals on the one hand and to promote climate policy on the other.

Further goals are the promotion of the socio-political acceptance of hydropower plants, the development of sustainable funding models for hydropower, the achievement of a balanced implementation of the European Water Framework Directive and the representation of the interests of hydropower with regard to its special importance in alpine regions.

The association's work relates only to the generation of hydropower, not to sales. Therefore, this includes the maintenance, renewal and construction of hydropower plants.

Positions

Under the aspect of the holistic consideration and evaluation of hydropower, the organization is particularly responsible for various points of view.

In general, the costs and benefits of ecological requirements must be weighed up against each other and the residual water requirements must be determined individually after a cost / benefit analysis that covers all aspects. The ecological continuity of existing systems is to be judged according to the actual need and the necessary economic effort.

The nature and landscape protection must not compromise subsequently the efficiency of existing plants, also general extension of their validity period are directed according to the life of the plants.

The association advocates the abolition of en and offers political support for the expansion of more cost-effective, exploitable potentials in hydropower.

In addition, care is taken to ensure that the Water Framework Directive (WFD) is not a purely ecological interpretation. Economic and energy policy goals must also be taken into account during implementation. Hydropower as a renewable energy should be promoted.
