The Dermatological Prevention Working Group (ADP) is a German specialist society with the aim of bringing the prevention concept closer to medical laypersons as well as doctors and scientists in nationwide campaigns on a broad basis . Cooperation partners are the German Cancer Aid Foundation , the German Dermatological Society (DDG) e. V. and the professional association of German dermatologists e. V. In addition, the international exchange of experience is promoted specifically for the prevention of skin cancer .

history

Even before the ADP was founded in 1993, an initiative committee had started cooperation with cancer aid. In view of the increasing number of cancer diseases, ADP is particularly concerned with the primary prevention and early detection of skin cancer. In addition to this focus, the specialist society actively deals with chronic inflammatory dermatoses such as psoriasis and neurodermatitis . She is also involved in allergy prevention activities.

Board of Directors and employees

The board works on a voluntary basis. The German Dermatological Society e. V. and the professional association of German dermatologists e. V. send one member each to the board. There is also a representative of the “Dermatological Oncology Working Group” (ADO), a community of the German Cancer Society (DKG) and the DDG. An expert team of specialists and scientists from all over Germany is available to advise the board.

Information work and cooperation

In addition to scientific projects, the ADP also carries out educational measures and events that are financed with the help of third-party funds. Deutsche Krebshilfe supports the prevention work against skin cancer in children and adolescents with funds. The working group does not receive any advertising support. In terms of information work for citizens, the cooperation with the German Cancer Aid, in which the German Cancer Society is also involved, has proven itself .

In January 2020, the ADP started a nationwide annual campaign against skin cancer caused by UV radiation from the sun and in solariums in Berlin, together with leading cancer organizations and representatives from health care and politics . ADP Chairman Eckhard Breitbart and Cancer Aid Honorary Ambassador Susanne Klehn criticized the fact that the legal ban on the use of solariums for minors in Germany is not consistently observed. According to estimates, at least 140,000 minors were given unhindered access to solariums in 2018 alone, despite a legal ban. The President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) Inge Paulini demanded that a ban on solariums for minors should also be enforced in all hotels, where, as in the fitness studios, compliance with the regulations is difficult to monitor. For the information campaign, the Berlin artist duo created "LOW BROS", the oversized light construction of a UV-radiating sun symbol, which can only be viewed in UV-safe protective clothing in exhibitions.

Claims in the Corona crisis

A central goal of the APD in the 2020 Corona crisis is the health policy call for a nationwide ban on solariums. Together with the German Cancer Aid Foundation, the APD appealed to the responsible politicians to act. At the same time, the aid organizations gave arguments against UV radiation. International experts continued to warn against solariums, because the high UV radiation has been shown to increase the risk of skin cancer. UV rays are currently also weakening the immune system. An additional health risk in times of the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be ruled out. "The German Cancer Aid Foundation and the Dermatological Prevention Working Group are now all the more sticking to their call for a ban on tanning beds," said Krebshilfe CEO Gerd Nettekoven . The temporary closings of sun studios and solariums have shown that it is possible "without artificial sun". According to scientific knowledge, UV rays are the most important risk factor for the development of skin cancer. This applies both to natural UV radiation from the sun and to that generated artificially in solariums. According to current projections, around 272,000 people in Germany are newly diagnosed with skin cancer every year. Of these, over 37,000 cases of the dangerous black skin cancer malignant melanoma are .

On World Cancer Day 2020, ADP and Krebshilfe demanded a statutory ban on tanning beds in Germany on the grounds: "Artificial UV radiation is a cancer risk factor." The public demand was followed by a nationwide and sometimes controversial discussion. The use of these devices causes "dangerous black skin cancer " in around 3,400 people across Europe every year . In 800 cases it leads to the death of the sick.

Skin cancer prevention in kindergartens and schools

As a central long-term project, ADP and the German Cancer Aid Foundation started the first nationwide permanent campaign “Skin cancer prevention in kindergartens” in 2017. In summer 2020 this program was expanded to include schools in grades 1 and 2. The prevention concept corresponds to the Clever in Sun and Shade campaign , which has been successful for years . Kindergartens are offered didactically prepared materials on sun protection free of charge and, through practical introductory lessons, the children are taught in a playful way how to behave correctly in the sun. In June 2017, the ambassador for skin cancer prevention, Susanne Klehn , honored the local AWO kindergarten “guests of the beech” as the first “Clever in Sun and Shade Kita” in Germany “in recognition of the exemplary prevention work against skin cancer” in childhood. All primary schools nationwide can participate and order a free project package for children in grades 1 and 2 at www.ukdd.de/sonnenschutz/grundschule. The innovative program for the prevention of skin cancer was developed by the Prevention Center of the National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden (NCT / UCC) as part of the German Cancer Aid campaign in cooperation with the ADP working group and the University of Cologne / Cologne University Hospital.

Honors

In 2019, the ADP was awarded the Hufeland Prize, endowed with 20,000 euros, for “pioneering achievements and outstanding research results in preventive medicine”. ADP chairman Eckhard Breitbart and doctors Nadia Seidel and Friederike Stölzel accepted the awards at a ceremony. They are the directors of the prevention center of the National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden (NCT / UCC) and co-initiators of the nationwide daycare sun protection project “Clever in Sun and Shade ”against skin cancer. Breitbart explained that the honor is also an appreciation for all persons and organizations who are involved in preventive medicine. The prize money is used to further develop the sun protection project for children.
