The Working Group for Clinical Nutrition (AKE) is an Austrian, medical-scientific society that aims at all aspects of clinical nutrition, nutrition and nutritional therapy for sick people.

General

The English-language name in the international cooperation is "Austrian Society for Clinical Nutrition". From a purely legal point of view, the AKE is a non-profit, non-profit-oriented association according to the Austrian Association Act . In accordance with its objectives, the AKE is an interdisciplinary and interprofessional association of all professional groups interested in clinical nutrition : medical professionals (again from many specialist areas), dieticians, nutritionists, hospital pharmacists and, last but not least, nurses who put nutritional therapy into practice. There is also a structured collaboration with industrial companies that manufacture products relevant to clinical nutrition. With almost 1,000 members, the AKE is now one of the largest medical-scientific societies in Austria. It is based in Vienna and is committed to promoting the therapeutic and scientific importance of clinical nutrition in Austria. In this way, it makes a significant contribution to improving general knowledge in the field of clinical nutrition and making the possibilities of this discipline more usable for patients.

History / foundation

In the 1960s and 1970s, artificial nutrition was developed for patients who cannot or should not eat. During this time, Gunter Kleinberger from the then I. Medical University Clinic in Vienna formed a group of mainly intensive care physicians from internal medicine, anesthesiology , paediatrics and surgery who dealt with this new form of nutritional therapy (initially primarily as parenteral nutrition ) has employed. In 1979, on the initiative of Kleinberger, the AKE was founded as one of the first European societies for this subject area, in the first few years as a branch of the Austrian Nutrition Society (ÖGE). In line with the main interests of the founding generation, the AKE initially described itself as a working group for artificial nutrition. With the expansion of the area of responsibility to include the entire field of clinical nutrition, the name was changed to the more comprehensive term "Working Group for Clinical Nutrition" after just a few years.

First published in German in 2000, these recommendations have now been translated into various languages: English, Hungarian, Russian, and Lithuanian. The total print run should exceed 30,000 copies. Most recently, these recommendations were drawn up as a "pocket book" in a ring binding. This very practice-oriented edition is currently out of print in the German version, only available in English, the new edition in German is to appear in 2013.
  2. NutritionNews: The AKE association magazine that has been published since 2006 together with the German (DGEM) and Swiss sister companies (GESKES). This magazine is currently published 4 times a year.

"NutritionDay" project

In addition to the artificial feeding of patients who cannot or should not eat, malnutrition or malnutrition is the burning problem in clinical nutrition worldwide. A high percentage of hospitalized patients are malnourished. Malnutrition is one of the strongest factors for the course of the disease, the development of complications, the prognosis and, in surviving patients, for functionality and quality of life. Not only the LFS and other societies, but also the European Union have made it their business to combat this malnutrition.

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Jörg Michael Hiesmayr from the Clinic for Anaesthesiology at the Medical University of Vienna has founded, with the support of AKE, a worldwide program to raise awareness of the importance of nutritional status and nutritional therapy in hospitals, the " nutritionDay ". This global initiative was extended to nursing homes and most recently to intensive care units (nutritionDay in the ICU 1-2-3).
