The Inland Shipping Working Group was founded on October 16, 2009 by the Hamburg Logistics Initiative and the Hamburg Authority for Economy and Labor.

The aim of the working group is to strengthen inland shipping as a sustainable mode of transport in the port of Hamburg and in the hinterland. The inland navigation working group started its operational work in December 2009. There are three main areas of work:

  • Inland ports and waterways
  • Hamburg harbour
  • Transport chains and logistics

A working group was formed for each field to assist the working group. The coordination, consolidation and linking of the working group results is carried out in the working group by a core team with representatives from the working groups.

In the case of container traffic , trimodal solutions should be implemented economically and environmentally in the long term by including all three transport modes. The focus is on the fact that the trimodal container terminals are located directly on inland waterways and that long transport routes are covered by inland waterway vessels because of the lowest specific man-hours, high safety and lowest emissions. Short distances and feeder services, on the other hand, are carried out by truck and rail is available as an intermediary and supplement.

During the Elbe Shipping Day 2010 in Wittenberge , the first approaches became visible. A trimodal terminal is being built here for handling containers, general cargo and project cargo. It was demanded that the federal government should finance the expansion of the waterways. The waterways should be suitable for the Great Rhine Ship and should be expanded and developed as required by the transport company.
