description

On 15,000 m² in 40 archaeological stations, the museum comprises three reconstructed residential stable houses ( long houses ), a shack for the dead and a pit house , as demonstrated by local archaeological finds . The houses are complemented by various facilities for everyday domestic and manual work. One of the longhouses houses an exhibition on the important areas of life from the Bronze Age 3000 years ago. On the basis of a ruin of another long house that burned down and remained standing in 2008 , the aim is to investigate how nature transforms a fire ruin made of wood over time. The museum offers visitors a wide range of historical activities, such as the production of tools from flint , bronze casting , bread baking , firing , spinning or weaving , a pottery furnace, the production and use of pitch and the storage and preservation of food through storage pits and Smoking and modern activities to join in and try out.

history

In 1969, during construction work on Lake Hitzacker, the first archaeological finds of ceramic shards and house plans were made. Scheduled archaeological excavations on the area did not begin until 1987 , as the further expansion of the lake and a federal road endangered the soil monuments . The following years brought further finds and house floor plans. It was found that the area had been around 2700 BC since the Neolithic Age. Until the 13th century was densely populated. In 1990, due to the importance of the finds, the Hitzacker Archaeological Center was founded as an open-air museum and the 17 hectare surrounding area was designated as an excavation reserve. The museum was looked after by the Lüchow-Dannenberg District Archeology and the Friends of the Archaeological Center Hitzacker eV Since 2006 it has been sponsored by the city of Hitzacker (Elbe).

The open-air museum is a location recognized by the city of Hitzacker for civil weddings , which are accompanied by the museum with a supporting program.
