Wolfgang Jürries (* 1950 in Hanover ) is a German historian , archivist , non-fiction author and editor . He researches and publishes, in particular, on the history of the northeast Lower Saxony region .

Life

Wolfgang Jürries studied history and political science from 1970 to 1977 as well as philosophy as a minor at the University of Hanover . His teacher for medieval history was among others Joachim Leuschner , for Eastern European history among others Hans-Heinrich Nolte , with whom he passed his first state examination on the subject of Russia's international market relations before 1914 . In Political Science, Jürries studied with Jürgen Seifert , Michael Vester , Peter Brückner and Oskar Negt .

After a study trip in 1978 through Canada, the USA, Mexico and Guatemala, Jürries worked until 1983 as a research assistant at the trade union trade, banks and insurance companies , for the special purpose association for the greater Hanover area and for the Lower Saxony state capital Hanover.

From 1984 to 1985, Jürries completed his legal clerkship in Hamburg and passed his second state examination for teaching at grammar schools. He then worked from 1986 to 1993 in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district as a research assistant for both the local history working group and the Lüchow-Dannenberg Museum Association . In 1994 he took over the position of district archivist in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district, which he held until 2010.

Also in 1994 Wolfgang Jürries joined the working group of Lower Saxony municipal archivists (ANKA), and in the same year took over the chairmanship of the local history working group Lüchow-Dannenberg , the umbrella organization of the regional museums and archives as well as several historical and natural history associations. As ANKA chairman, he is also the editor of the Hannoversches Wendland magazine series and other publications, and he also organizes lectures and conferences on regional history .

In 1998, Jürries became a member of the History Section in the Lower Saxony Home Association , and in the same year he joined the Working Group for Social and Economic History of the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen .

With a focus on the region of northeast Lower Saxony, Wolfgang Jürries researches in particular the development of settlements and cultural landscapes since the Middle Ages, rural ancillary trades since the early modern period, and the political history of the 19th and 20th centuries. One result of this work is the Wendland Lexicon , which was created together with Berndt Wachter and published from 2000 .
