Archibald Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Archibald Prize has been awarded annually in Australia since 1921 and was donated by JF Archibald (1856–1919), editor of the weekly magazine The Bulletin .

background

The award is considered to be the most important award in the field of portrait painting in Australia. The Archibald Prize is supported by the Art Gallery of New South Wales managed and 75,000 AUD doped. Only artists who have lived in Australia for at least one year prior to submitting a portrait "of a man or a woman" are eligible. Every year around 700 pictures are submitted, of which around 40 are then displayed in the final. Only one work may be submitted annually by each artist. In 1964 and 1980, the prize was not awarded because no portraits were submitted that met the requirements. In addition to the main prize, awards are also given in the two categories People's Choice Award (since 1988) and Packing Room Prize (since 1991).
