The Archiconvent of the Templars in Munich, often simply called Templar Monastery for short , is a monastery of the Trinitarion of the oriental-orthodox-catholic and cross-knightly choir and hospitaller order of the Templer eV , who lives according to the rules of the historical Templar order . The entrepreneur's villa, which originally stood alone here and then merged into the building complex of the monastery, is registered as a monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.

The previous seat was at Birkenleiten 27.

location

The monastery is located in the Untergiesing district at Birkenleiten 35 on the Auer Mühlbach, about 200 m north of the Kraemer'schen Kunstmühle .

building

The main building was built in 1880 on behalf of the entrepreneur and jeweler Karl Winterhalter. The villa originally featured old German romantic style elements. In 1968 the religious order acquired the building and converted it in the following years in the neo-Gothic style for their own needs.

A 67 m high onion dome is characteristic of the building . The tower onion is 18 m high, transmits the patriarchal cross of order and is surrounded by four smaller towers, which symbolize the four evangelists and the Jerusalem cross decorated. The main facade of the building was also designed with onion domes.

monastery

The religious community was founded in 1936 by Karl Hirn from Seeshaupt . After the Second World War, the members moved to Untergiesing, bought the former entrepreneur's villa in 1968 and expanded it. On July 17, 1974, the community was entered in the register of associations at the Munich District Court and on November 26, 1974 the association became a member of the German Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband (DPWV), which gave it the status of non-profit .

The double monastery is run by thirteen monks and thirteen nuns (symbolic of Jesus Christ and the twelve disciples ). The religious order lives according to strict rules and in seclusion. Groceries are handed out to the needy every day.
