Archiducatus Austriae Superioris Descriptio facta Anno 1667

Reprint from 2005

The Archiducatus Austriae Superioris Descriptio facta Anno 1667 is a map of the Archduchy of Austria ob der Enns (today Upper Austria ) by Georg Matthäus Vischer , published in 1669 . It remained the most accurate and comprehensive representation for a century.

Vischer signed a contract with the Obderennsischen estates in the spring of 1667 on the mapping and received the necessary freedom of movement guaranteed in a patent. In the summer of the same year he began to work in the field and was able to submit a finished design in February 1668. The map was engraved by the Augsburg master Melchior Küssel (* 1626; † around 1683) and appeared in 1669. Since Vischer, in contrast to older cartographers, traveled the country himself and did not draw any older maps, he also used this opportunity to produce views (topographies) of Obderenns cities and mansions, which appeared in 1674 in his Topographia Austriae superioris modernae .

Vischer's map remained the authoritative cartographic representation of the country until the end of the 18th century, and an updated edition with drawings was even published in 1808. Today's Innviertel did not come to Upper Austria from Bavaria until 1779 and is therefore not on Vischer's map. Instead, the eastern part of today's Mühlviertel forms the Schwartzviertel .
