Archie Birkin

Charles Archibald Cecil "Archie" Birkin (born March 30, 1905 , † June 7, 1927 in Rhencullen, Isle of Man ) was a British motorcycle racer .

Life

Archie Birkin came from a wealthy Nottingham family. His parents were Sir Thomas Stanley Birkin, 2nd Bt. And the Hon. Margaret Diana Hopetoun Chetwynd. His brother Tim (1896–1933) was a racing car driver , two-time Le Mans winner and one of the Bentley Boys .

Birkin had a fatal accident on June 7, 1927 during training for the Isle of Man TT , which was held in the early morning hours with traffic on the Snaefell Mountain Course . He hit a wall with his 500 cc McEvoy in Rhencullen while trying to avoid a van heading towards Peel and was dead on the spot. The curve on the A3 between Kirk Michael and Bishopscourt has been called Birkin's ever since Bend . From 1928 onwards, the training sessions for the Isle of Man TT and the Manx Grand Prix were no longer held while traffic was running.
